Jason Snell
Biofeedback Musician, Programmer and Founder of Primary Assembly
“Research, creativity, and service are the foundations of my work.
I create immersive experiences via products, installations, and performances, leveraging over 25 years of expertise in computer programming, electronic music production, visual design, and mindfulness practice.
My journey began with building HTML and Flash interfaces, later evolving into generative artificial intelligence and musical neurofeedback systems. My NYU thesis work focused on psychoacoustics, developing a sound methodology that induces a creative, subconscious "theta" state. I’ve worked with world-renowned dancers, converting their movements into music. Additionally, I have devised systems that convert electromagnetic atmospheric activity into haptic feedback and created permanent public art installations that generate light compositions from pedestrian movement, temperature, and tidal patterns.
In the commercial sphere, I have produced award-winning work for the interactive departments of HBO, MTV, and Condé Nast. My academic contributions include guest lecturing and mentoring at NYU and the University of Iowa. I have showcased my work MIT, NYU, Sundance, and CPH:DOX, and have performed and exhibited in Shanghai, Dubai, Berlin, and across North America.”
